Segregation in the USA (1950)

In 1950, segregation existed in many parts of the United States. Segregation was the separation of Black and White people in public places such as schools, buses, restaurants and restrooms (toilets).

In the Southern states, segregation was legal. Black Americans did not have the same rights as White Americans. In some states, segregation was prohibited, especially in the North.

This map shows that the USA was divided on the question of civil rights. Segregation was unfair and discriminatory. Many African Americans fought for equality and freedom during the Civil Rights Movement.

Important vocabulary

  • segregation = séparation raciale
  • discrimination = discrimination
  • equal rights = droits égaux
  • legal = légal
  • prohibited = interdit
  • civil rights = droits civiques
  • equality = égalité
